Flying Legends

Back

July 2023

  • 'Flying Legends', regarded by many as one of the best airshows around, is an event featuring only old Warbirds and other Vintage aircraft. Every time it is held, masses of historic aircraft ranging from the interwar period, to World War 2 and even post-war take to the skies to amaze the onlookers.

The event used to run annually for 30 years at Duxford Aerodrome up till 2019, with Covid causing the 2020 show to be cancelled. The show only came back in 2023, though it hasn’t been run again to date.
With the 2023 event being hosted at RAF Church Fenton, I was able to visit. Since I was only able to go on the first day, the 15th July, I wasn't able to capture every participating aircraft, but that didn't mean I had little to see. At the time, it was my biggest shoot, equaling nearly 3,000 images by the time I left.

The day itself was excellent. Even though a rain shower rolled in during the time the flight line was open, it luckily didn't stick around and the air display went ahead.
It was certainly something special to see so many vintage aircraft take to the skies to create a roaring display.

If you do get the chance, this is an event worth going to, even if you're not too interested in aviation.
