Jubilee Class ‘Sierra Leone’
August 2023
-
A small and simple shoot this one, which takes place right after completing the Hellifield Post Train shoot as this gem rolled in right as I was finishing up said shoot.
Depicted is Ex-LMS Jubilee Class 'Sierra Leone', hauling a West Coast Railways tour named 'The Waverly'. The engine has an interesting background since it's actually a different Jubilee disguised as 45627 'Sierra Leone', who had long since been scrapped. The engine here is actually Number 5699 (BR No. 45699) 'Galatea', built in 1936 at Crewe Works, being rescued from the scrapyard of Barry, Wales in 1980 and then being sold to West Country Railways in 2002.
It was November 2019 when 'Galatea' was repainted into BR Brunswick Green with the late crest from her previous LMS Crimson Lake, renumbered 45562 and renamed, now masquerading as scrapped Jubilee Class 'Alberta'. She carried this identity until July 2021 when she was again renamed to the scrapped No. 45627 'Sierra Leone', though she retained the number of her previous disguise, which it's unclear as to why.
The engine is still currently running in this guise as of 2025, with some very minor livery modifications and now wearing the correct number of 45627.
